We celebrated the 148th anniversary of our church on April 29.   This year we dedicated a historic marker on the front of the church building following the service and open a special pictorial display in Fellowship Hall.
This year the April 29 worship service honored the legacy of the period from 1909 to 1962 (in 2011 we reviewed last fifty years of ministry from 1961-2011).  There were two significant events in the life of CHPC congregation in this period:  the ministry of J. Lowrey Fendrich (1938- 1944); and in 1954 the merger of two Presbyterian Congregations on the Hill.  In 2013 we will celebrate the period from 1869 to 1909.

In 2014 we will celebrate the actions of a few Capitol Hill residents who, in 1864 after reading that Dr. Chester had organized a Presbyterian congregation under a tree in New Jersey, invited him to come and organize a Presbyterian congregation on Capitol Hill.  This resulted in the Presbytery of the Potomac  organizing  the Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church with 34 members and installing the Rev Dr. Chester as it’s first Pastor; and, in 1869, the laying or a cornerstone for the present Church building at 201 4th Street, SE.

A special anniversary offering is taken each year to commemorate the organizing of the congregation.   This year the offering benefits the historic windows and doors in the Chapel built in 1892 as a Sunday school room. The offering also helps finish the weatherization and painting the room so that we may use this space for a variety of purposes.  Please consider contributing to this wonderful renovation.
